Rebel Reminders

Before computers, I was a sticky note junkie.  I would leave sticky notes everywhere to remind me of the many things that needed to get done.  These days, I use my online calendar to keep me on track.  So, today at lunch I took the time to set up all my reminders for the next few weeks.  Here are just some of the reminders I needed to create in order to keep up with my life:

9/5: G’s b-day. Send card/gift.

9/8: D’s b-day. Call/card

9/10: Schedule mammogram, ask for day off

9/11: A’s b-day. Call/card

9/15: RSVP to M’s party, get gift

9/21: CC school application available on-line. Fill out, send in.

9/22: Church blessing. Donation due, drop check off at rectory.

And that was just for September and just my personal ones. Triple that for the work reminders. And that doesn’t even include the ongoing reminders I already set up yearly like taking the trash out every thursday, daycare fees due every first monday, etc.  After typing all these up, it started to dawn on why I always seem so overwhelmed.  Each day, I check my Blackberry and feel the weight pile down as I am reminded of all the things I need to get done for that day.

Don’t get me wrong, the reminders work.  They really help me stay on track and get things done on time. But Lord have mercy! Is it any wonder I am basket case?

Well, this got me a little peeved to say the least, so I decided to give myself just one more reminder:

9/31: Reminder! If you haven’t seen The Time Traveler’s Wife by now, get your ass out there and go to the movies! You deserve it, goddamnit. You NEVER go to the movies.  And you really want to see this movie! So fucking go already.

Oh yes, I did.  I actually put that in my calendar and boy, did it feel so fucking good.  And I just know how good it is going to feel when it pops up on my Blackberry that day.  Finally, a reminder that reminds me of something good.  Something positive. Something that has to do with me, for me.

Which got me to thinking, why stop there? Why just one reminder?  So, I went ahead and randomly picked two days each month and wrote myself a rebel reminder for each day. And boy, did that feel even better! And it will continue to feel good all year. Here are some of the notifications I will be getting on my Blackberry in the next coming months:

10/6 - Reminder! You need new boots! Did you get them yet? If not, then schedule a Sunday afternoon alone to shop in town and get some gorgeous kickass boots.  Fall is here already! You work hard for your money, you deserve to spend it on yourself too, you know.

11/20 - Reminder! You are a philosopher! When was the last good meal you gave your brain? Today, each your lunch at your desk and surf the internet for some philosophical soul food (fuck the power point presentation). You have the sites already bookmarked as favorites for Pete’s sake. CLICK ON THEM! READ! FEED YOUR BRAIN!

12/11 - Reminder! You have a jacuzzi in your bathroom. A big one. The same one you scrub and clean all year round but never use.  Tonight, lock the bathroom door and chill.  Light some candles, let the jets create a mountain of bubbles and just soak, relax, regroup.  Don’t forget Handel. When was the last time you listened to Water Music? (P.S. It’s big enough for two. Wink Wink)

1/16 - Reminder! You love crepes! The girls love crepes! Go out to brunch with the family this weekend. They deserve it. You’d be lost without those girls. Let them know by splurging for desert crepes too!

2/5 - Reminder! You are a blogger. Delurk. Comment on every blog you read today. Let them know you are there, you are reading, you really do care. Every one without exception!

That is just a sample, there are more. I wrote dozens. But here is the final one. Because I really do care about my bloggy friends, I am tacking up this virtual sticky note as a reminder to you all.

What a great idea. And on the other hand it makes Bossy realize why she feels like such a failure when it comes to follow-through, especially in terms of cards sent to friends and calls made to friends and other things involving stuff not done on the computer.

Notes, Bossy, notes!
