Despite Strong Evidence, The ish Will Most Likely Stay

Within the blogging community today, there was a major debate surrounding Philadelphia blogger Momish and her chosen blog name. Petitions were made to change her blog name to simply “Mom”, dropping the “ish”,which gives the impression that she lacks the appropriate mothering skills to truly deserve the title “Mom”. Strong arguments were given from those who support the change and from those who vehemently oppose it.

The debate started early this morning when an anonymous blogger submitted this photograph as evidence that Momish was indeed acting like a true mom:

 Exhibit A

The argument was put forth that only a woman fully committed to motherhood would bake cupcakes for her daughter’s birthday party at school. However, those opposing the change were not convinced, noting that aside from this one time, Momish had usually brought store made cupcakes and cookies to school, if she brought anything at all.  In addition, they were quick to point out several other reasons why Momish must continue to be seen as mom-ish, despite this sudden domestic act of love. The list is too long to show in its entirety, but highlights included the following points and comments:

1) The fact that she didn’t follow the directions correctly and added 4 eggs instead of 3. Such a thing, it was argued, would never have happened to a real mom.

“Boxed cake mixes are the simplest things in the world to do! Only someone making them for the first time could screw it up! I’d like to see her make a cake from scratch, that’s what I would like to see.”

- June Cleaver

2) The fact that she never found out how the exact number of students in her daughter’s class.  As a result of this oversight, there were only 12 party bags instead of the required 19.

“C’mon, what mother wouldn’t think to ask how many kids are in the class? I mean, most moms don’t even have to ask, they already know such an important thing. Me personally? I make it point to know the name of every kid in all six of my children’s classes!”

- Carol Brady

3) The fact that she tried to get out of the whole thing entirely.

“Let’s not forget the most important thing here, I overheard her with my own ears complaining… how she wished those damn teachers had just kept their mouths shut… how her daughter wouldn’t have known her birthday was Wednesday…how she now had to go and do the stupid cupcake thing… Talk about being horrified! I almost called child services on her right there and then! The name Momish is already giving her too much credit!”

Supporters, however, were quick to challenge the testimony put forth, reminding us that Momish was on completely on her own this week.  And yet, even with her husband out of town, she was able to juggle her full time job with multiple play dates, nutritious meals, bedtime stories and the like.  One supporter even mentioned how Momish took her daughter to the library Monday night, completely forgoing a very important deadline.

“Single moms aside, most of us by Tuesday night would be pulling our hair out and knocking back a few glasses of wine instead of happily baking cupcakes for a bunch of ungrateful brats.  After all, that’s the last thing you want to do after working all day, even during a normal week! If you ask me, this debate is total bullshit!

- Peg Bundy

In fact, most moms polled agreed that only a devoted and competent mother could pull off baking home made cupcakes after such a hectic week, yet alone remember to purchase a tin to carry them in, put together a dozen goodie bags and actually get to work on time to boot.

But in the end, it wasn’t the cupcakes that settled the debate.

It was her:

Exhibit B

The very happy and excited Birthday Girl who gushed, “thanks Mom!”

“When I started blogging, my daughter was just born.  Today she turned four! FOUR! Sometimes it feels like just yesterday that I can hardly believe she is really four. But four years is a lot of time.  It’s enough time to know that being a mom is one of the best things in the world. So whether or not I am known as Momish throughout the blogsphere is not that important to me.  Being Mom at home is all that matters.

 - Momish

Yes, just about everyone agreed that being called Mom at home was all that mattered, thus putting an end to the debate once and for all.  One blogger quoted Shakespeare, saying “what’s in a name?” Another reminded the group that “Momish” isn’t even a legitimate word.

Not surprisingly, once both sides came together, the only topic left on the table was whether or not Piper enjoyed her cupcakes and had a wonderful birthday party at school.  And the verdict? Yes, on both accounts!

ISH a keeper!!! and apparently b'day cupcakes rule.... many public schools tried to ban the practice because of the 'healthy snacks' policies...but mom's protested and had the exception made for birthdays.
