Five Facts For Friday
Friday, October 2, 2009 at 12:00PM Fact #1: Each ballerina in the Pennsylvania Ballet uses 50-110 pairs of pointe shoes per season. Some go through one pair of shoes per performance at $65 a pop! That’s a shitload of shoes, ya’ll. And probably why the ballet keeps torturing me for more money.
Fact #2: They make wireless doorbells. We found this out after my husband attempted to fix our old one. He replaced the transformer, he reran the wires, he replaced this and replaced that, all to no avail. Then on his fourth or fifth run to Lowe’s, he discovered they make wireless doorbells! You probably already knew this, but did you know that if your neighbor also has a wireless doorbell, your doorbell will go off every time someone pushes their doorbell? Betcha didn’t know that!
Fact #3: Ringworm is not really a worm. It is a fungus. It sure looks like a worm burrowed under the skin, but it’s not. Just your average fungi. Did you know it is highly contagious and they send kids home from school for that? Maybe you did know all of that, but I bet you didn’t know my daughter has one of these fungi wormy things and now her new school has yet another reason to confirm we are incompetent parents!
Fact #4: Programmers often add “error handling routines” to their code, small routines that will shoot up an alert or send out an email if there is an error in the programming. OK, so maybe you had some idea that this sort of error checking goes on. But I bet you didn’t know that an error in the little error handling routine itself could cause an infinite loop, producing roughly 1,000 emails per second. And furthermore, that sending roughly 1,000 emails per second can bring down a server, fill up your mailbox in less than 15 minutes and make you look like a complete idiot! Betcha didn’t know that! I won’t even go into what roughly 80,000 emails can do to a Blackberry. Let’s just say I know a little something about all this and it ain’t pretty.
Fact #5: This was Amazon’s most reviewed item (over 14,000). C’mon, don’t try to tell me you knew that! Well if you are like me and didn’t know, now you know so consider yourself “in the know”. Because something tells me this could be the next subculture craze. A bunch of people walking around in these Three Wolf tee shirts, all winking at each other and tapping their noses a la Paul Newman. But, you might ask, how do you know if the person wearing the shirt is in the know? Simple. If there’s a mullet, they probably ain’t in the know. A mullet would lead me to believe the person just happened to like the shirt. Although there is something catchy about it, I’ll admit.
Have a great weekend.
