Join The Club

When I moved back to Philly, I tried hard to find a book club in the area.  It is now a decade later, and I have yet to find one to join.  So, sadly enough, I piggy back on my friend’s sister’s club in D.C.  Every time I see her, she writes down their list and I slowly make my way through it.

Yet, there remains a problem.  I still have no one to discuss the books with in the end. Me, myself and I just don’t cut it.  I had a second blog called “My Reviews”, but again, it was just me talking to myself when all was said and done.  So, I got rid of it.

But as I bop around to all your blogs and see the books you are reading or commenting on, it got me to thinking that we can have a virtual book club of our own.  Nothing too structural, I am way too disorganized for that!  But, Squarespace has a cool discussion module that I thought I would try out.  So, instead of a review blog, here it is:

My Book Club discussion blog.

Care to join?  It’s easy, really. Anyone can start a thread by creating a post about a book they want to discuss. Likewise, anyone can reply and keep a thread going. I started one thread called “Suggestion List”, where you can add your picks for what “the club” should read (I am always open to suggestions for a good read).  Usually, book clubs come together to discuss once a month or so.  Since we’re virtual, we can come together anytime.  I will try to keep things somewhat organized by maintaining the “currently reading” information at the top (with hopefully a time frame as well).

So, let me know what you think!  And, please let me know if you have any problems reading or posting!!!  I am open to all suggestions, from what to read to how you would like to see the discussion unfold.

P.S. I emailed the tech support at Squarespace, but unfortunately, they confirmed that there is no RSS feed for the discussion blogs. Nor is there a way to sign up for responses to entries you create.  It sucks, I know. But, new entries will show up under “This Just In” on my side bar.  That is the best I can do. Sorry!

So, is there a certain book being read each month and discussed? Or there are multiple books and we read whichever one we want?

Plz to clarify? Email if you prefer. :)

Ohh..I read Middlesex over the summer and it was good. Like you, Momish, I'm always looking for a good read so will have to check this out.

Radical Mama, I was thinking it can be a free form in general, but also a chosen book to read as a group and then post about when the "end date" arrives. Right now, I am stuck in the middle of Middlesex (no pun intended), so I was thinking of giving myself another month on that, then jumping right in on a new book.

I am open to suggestions!

A great idea, assuming I can sort my lazy ass out and actually read a book or ten.

I wanna play. I like the free form, but I also need to be forced to pick just one. I have a tendency to read 3 or 4 books at once!

What a good idea. Now if only I could reduce my blog reading habit and read books again...

What a brilliant idea! Sign me up (but don't tell my book club I'm cheating on them =;?}

Have you joined "Work it, Mom" yet? There is a book club option for groups.
I read for pleasure, but I have less time to discuss during the school year. I suggest "How Elizabeth Barrett Browning saved my life" by (oh, what is her first name?) M___ Medwed. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
