I Need My Space
Sunday, October 1, 2006 at 10:50AM At some point in a person’s life, he or she makes that mental transition into full mature adulthood. It doesn’t happen overnight, but at a gradual and ethereal pace. Little by little, a person takes on more and more responsibility within their own lives as they move up in their career, buy a house, have children, etc. Then one day, they just seem ready. Suddenly, previous actions seem immature, previous ideals seem flawed, previous desires and ambitions seem trivial. They have crossed over, they are the adult. Well, apparently, I am not quite there yet.
Yesterday, my friend sent me a link to her MySpace account. I had only been on MySpace once before to look up my stepdaughter’s site just to make sure it was kosher and no pervs were sniffing around. Other than that, it didn’t seem all that interesting to me. So, there I was checking my friend’s page out and I remembered an email I got way back when saying Ian McCulloch (of Echo & The Bunnymen) had a MySpace page. So, for shits and giggles, I looked him up. Sure fucking enough, there he was. And, it’s not just a picture of him telling me his birth date (which I already know) and his zodiac sign (which again I know). No no no, there were videos, mp3’s of unreleased songs, a blog with his own writing. But, get this. The last time he logged on was that day. THAT DAY! My heart started pounding, my fingers started to tingle. I could feel him. With my fingers on my keyboard, which was connected to the network cable, connected to the internet, connected to his network cable, connected to his computer, connected to his keyboard, I was practically touching this man I have adored and admired since I was 17!
So, anyhoo, they also have this online chat thingy, but you need an account in order to initiate a chat. So, I had to create an account. I figure I can use this little known technique called “stalking” to somehow manage to catch him online (Liverpool time) and say “hi”, among other things (I have always wanted to know what the hell that ‘Monkeys’ song was about). In the meantime, I will just watch his video over and over, because really, I just can’t get enough of this man. He’s that amazing. You should check him out, if you don’t already know. This is like, so cool! There is just no way I can even pretend to be all grown up and mature about this, not when I am soooo close. So please, if you are feeling generous, let me know I am not the only adult that can be reduced to teenage idiocrasy by their lifelong idol.
